Jim's Security - Security Camera & CCTV Systems Hobart
Whether buying new or upgrading, Jim's Security is a fully accredited member of the Jim's Group and all work completed is backed by the Jim's Group $1M work guarantee. We provide the latest innovations, working in conjunction with the biggest and best brands to ensure our solutions are cutting edge and reliable. Police checked franchisees are approved by the largest franchise group in Australia. WHY WOULD YOU CHOOSE ANYONE ELSE?
Whilst your security system will provide notification of an event, CCTV allows you to either capture evidence through recorded video or the ability to remotely view your property to check if any break-in has actually occurred. CCTV can be installed externally as a deterrent to potential intruders and also internally to give you the ability to keep an eye on pets.
Jim's Security provides professional-grade IP based CCTV systems that record to NVR's (Network Video Recorder). We install NVR based systems as they are the latest technology, beware of DVR (analogue) systems as the picture quality and feature set is inferior to digital NVR technology.
We supply a number of professional-grade brands, including Swann, Dahua, Hikvision & Uniview.
Jim's Group started as a part-time gardening business while Jim Penman completed his PhD in history. It went full time in 1982 and was franchised in 1989. Currently, there are nearly 4,000 Franchisees in four countries, and growing at the rate of around 200 per year. Jim's Group also boasts one of Melbourne's best conference centres which is used for meetings, functions and training for Jim's franchisees and staff.
There are no company-owned businesses, and all work is done by licensed operators and Franchisees. Franchisor rights are also privately held, and all Divisions, except Mowing, are partnerships with individuals experienced in those industries.
Jim is the owner and full-time CEO of Jim's Group. He is happily married with ten children, loves his work and has no plans to retire – ever!
For all the business success he has enjoyed over the years, Jim Penman remains remarkably unassuming. At the start of the interview, when Wealth Creator asks to confirm his correct business title, he has no idea. He has to pull out his business card, which says he is a director.
"It's funny though when you own a business," he said. "You don't ever introduce yourself as a director, or CEO or founder or anything like that. I just say, "I'm Jim," and that is usually enough."…As written in Wealth Creator Magazine.
Security Camera & CCTV Systems FAQs
The mere presence of an outdoor camera can deter criminals, but it's extremely dangerous to rely on dummy cameras because seasoned burglars can typically spot them from a mile away. In most cases, thieves will case a home before they rob it, and if they spot cameras installed by a professional alarm system, they will most likely abort the burglary attempt. Also, if you are the victim of a burglary, the cameras will record the incident and help capture the criminal and the hopeful return of your stolen goods. This leads to our next point.
Aiding the Police
In the case that a burglary does occur, your professionally-installed security cameras will have recorded the incident in high-definition. Police can use these videos and images to capture the culprit, prevent future crimes and return your items.
Checking in on the Family
Security cameras aren't limited to the protection of a home. They can also allow you to check in on your kids while you're at work. So often, families with a set of working parents find themselves in a predicament when their child gets out of school in the mid-afternoon. With a camera security system, a parent can always check in on their children from work by using the remote monitoring feature of the system.
Don't forget the pets!
Just as you can check in on your kids using the camera system, you can check on your pets too. Pets are a big part of many peoples' lives, and it can be stressful to leave them home alone and expensive to pay someone to look after them. With a professionally installed home security camera system, you can check in on how your pets are doing from work.
After a burglary, you're required to make an insurance claim due to vandalism or theft. This is where your high-definition security camera comes into play. With the footage, you can easily document the incident and validate your insurance claim. Also, a security system can typically lead to discounts on home security of up to 20%.
The Internet is everywhere, and these days it's hard to imagine a life without it. That said, if you install IP security cameras regularly, you're bound to come across a situation where you need to install a camera in a place where there is no Internet access. Which raises the question: is it even possible to install an IP camera without an Internet connection?
Yes, it is possible to install your IP security camera without connecting it to the Internet. But without this Internet connection, you can only access your cameras from devices located on the same network as the cameras themselves.
Default Password Access
Anyone looking to break into CCTV cameras can start by simply looking for its IP address online and logging in. Then, by using engines such as angryip.org or shadon.io, they can obtain that signature information and begin trying passwords that will grant access to the wireless camera itself or, if a router is attacked, entire security systems.
In theory, this should be difficult, and IP security should protect network data. Still, the shocking reality is that these passwords are often identical to the default factory settings provided by the manufacturer. For example, in the case of the Hikvision hack, it was known to be "12345" with a username of "admin."
Changing default passwords for a new security camera system should be a no-brainer in this day and age. So the lesson here is not to overlook the small details. All the world's firewalls and hardened network protocols won't help if an unauthorised user can log in with a commonly-used or factory-set password to gain remote access to indoor-outdoor surveillance.
Find the User ID
When CCTV cameras are harder to breach, malicious actors can instead look for the user ID. This was easy to find in a cookie value for Hikvision. Hackers could then reset the account to take over and have a full run of the device, its hard drives, and perhaps the wireless security system as a whole.
"While the user id is a hashed key, we found a way to find out the user id of another user just by knowing the email, phone, or username they used while registering," wrote Medium user Vangelis Stykas earlier this year, even after Hikvision had worked to fix its known flaws.
"After that," the writer continued, "you can view the live feed of the cam/DVR [digital video recorder], manipulate the DVR, change that user's email/phone and password, and effectively lock the user out."
Finding Command Lines
Once this became common knowledge, the Chinese company recognised and patched the flaw. The patch was then included in subsequent firmware updates for all its security cameras with known vulnerabilities. Hikvision stated that the code was a holdover from the testing phase, which developers neglected to remove before launch.
Despite all the press in the security community, many operators never bother to install the latest firmware onto their surveillance cameras. So, this flaw is an issue that even novice hackers will likely continue to leverage.
Check Out Strange Noises from Your IP Camera, Baby Monitor
Signs that your IP camera has been hacked can mostly be difficult to detect. But there is an obvious one. If you hear a strange voice coming from your security camera, no doubt that your security camera has been hijacked, and someone is spying on you through the camera.
Baby monitor hacked news and videos show that hackers remotely interact with your kids through the hacked security camera, listen to your conversations, and more. Terrifying, isn't it?
See If Your Security Camera Rotates Abnormally
If you find out that your home security camera is following your movement, your camera has more than likely been hacked. Someone hacks your pan-tilt camera and control it on his side. As a result, your hacked security camera or baby monitor may rotate by itself or point to a different position than usual.
Check If the Security Settings Have Been Changed
How do you see if your surveillance camera has been hacked?
It is necessary to check if the security settings have been changed and the password has been set to default. The person who hacks into your security camera may leave some information on the settings. Some pride security camera hackers even change the camera names to "Upgrade Firmware" to show off their hacking talents.
Find Out If There's a Blinking LED Light
You can also check if a randomly blinking LED light has hacked your webcam security camera.
If you see that the LED light is blinking randomly, your security camera is probably being hacked. In that case, reboot your computer. If the light flashes again after 10 minutes or so, open up your Task Manager, click on the "processes" tab and search for "winlogon.exe." Upon doing that, if you see more than one copy of the program, disconnect your computer from the Internet and use an anti-virus program to run a full system scan to ensure your computer has not been infected with a Trojan.
Pay Attention to an Illuminated LED Light
If you notice that the LED light is turned on but didn't enable it, that's a telltale sign that your security camera has been hacked and accessed.
When someone hacks your security camera, they can control it, including turning it on and off. So if that LED light is on and you know for sure you haven't turned your camera on, follow the steps above to tell whether your security system has been hacked or not.
Check the Data Flow of Your Security Camera
How can you detect if your security camera has been hacked? You can also track the data flow on your network and your video surveillance camera. Pay special attention to sudden spikes in your network traffic, which reveals something unusual invalid login in your video feed.
The main purpose of a CCTV system is to allow you to see everything that happens in an area. With the push of a button, an officer can easily rewind the tape to aid in an investigation, have a secured doorway control program in Singapore, or a mom could check the feed to check up on the family cat. Rather than just lessening crime, there are also other practical things that a monitoring system can let you do, both in the workplace and in the home.
If something interesting happened in your backyard, you always have a record of it. Whether it's a crime or simply something that you would like to be reminded of, such as the face of a new neighbour, you could easily consult your CCTV records. Since a CCTV can systematically organise information, you wouldn't have to worry too much about going through records and finding your clip easily.
In the UK, CCTV has been shown to reduce crime by up to 50%, closing half more cases than they would have without the use of a security camera. CCTVs can undoubtedly help reduce crime rates in public areas and private spaces, such as homes and offices. While the UK often use more expensive IP CCTV, you may still lessen crime with a good analog camera.
An analog camera is still a good alternative, especially if you're tight on budget or if you're simply securing a small private space, like a home or office. However, while an IP camera has a few benefits over analog, such as heightened resolution and remote access, it may be a bit too much for the average homeowner.
Can make people uncomfortable and breach privacy
Many people are not comfortable with a security camera, and it's not hard to see why. Having your actions monitored 24/7 can make people feel anxious. It may raise issues of trust and privacy, especially in private spaces. In professional environments and homes, it can stir controversy and be offensive to the people being monitored.
Even the most expensive IP camera isn't 100% safe. As with any piece of technology, there are still vulnerabilities in a CCTV system, which can be a huge deterrent to anyone planning to invest in a system. Criminals, with enough determination and know-how, can disable or access your CCTV system.
However, it should be noted that there are still a lot of steps you can take to keep your system safe from tampering, such as getting your model from a trusted manufacturer or making sure that all connections are closed off and secure.
Unable to stop crime
While CCTV systems have been shown to lessen criminal activity and raise the probability of wrong-doers being caught, CCTV cameras are still just that: cameras. It can only record the crime as it happens. It will be unable to do anything about it, unlike an alarm system that can alert the proper authorities.
Therefore, CCTV cameras aren't very effective in stopping crime as it happens; you will need to pair them with other security systems, such as an alarm system, to make sure that you are fully protected from crime.

Access Control Systems
Matrix Security Integration can supply and install a large range of client-specific Electronic Access Control Systems (EACS). ECAS is becoming increasingly popular in regards to a truly flexible access control system. The tried and true mechanical option of access control – Master Key-Systems – is not going anywhere soon and will at least somewhat always remain in the market. However, EACS are quite often the system of choice in today's ever-changing security industry.
Contact us today to organise an onsite security survey. We can then recommend an access control solution that will fit in with your needs both now and in the future.
Matrix Security Integration has the expertise and knowledge to provide you with a premium home automation solution. With the ever-increasing amount of wireless products in the marketplace, the home automation industry is becoming more and more popular. These quite often economical wireless home automation products are giving most homeowners an affordable way to introduce home automation into their homes. However, is all this wireless technology in our homes good for the health of our family? This is a topic that is certainly recommended to be researched by each and every homeowner. Contrary to the marketplace direction of close to all home automation products being wireless, Matrix Security Integration believes that wherever possible, it is generally best to install hardwired devices that provide greater reliability and performance.
Matrix Security Integration provides our clients with a range of intercom system solutions, whether it be a homeowner who simply requires an intercom system to see and communicate with who has arrived at the front door, without actually needing to be at the front door or a home or business owner that not only needs to view on the indoor station/viewing screen who has arrived at the premises but who also needs the convenience of being able to grant the visitor access via the press of a button, subsequently opening their automatic gate to allow access into the property. We can also design, supply and install large apartment complex intercom systems upon request.
Intercom Systems can be set up to be utilised even when you're not at home. This is achieved by integrating your intercom system with your home network (an active internet connection is required) and then installing an app on your smartphone, subsequently providing you with the ability to view and talk to the visitor at your property and if you choose to allow them access into the property, the smartphone app can be used to trigger the intercom system to open your automatic gate.
Automatic Gates & Doors
Matrix Security Integration can organise the supply and installation of a range of automatic gates and doors. These automatic gates or doors are generally then integrated with an alarm or intercom system, which then enables streamlined and practical use of the automatic opening/closing device.

CCTV & Camera Systems are a high growth category in the security industry, with many high-quality & affordable offerings now available in the marketplace for both residential & commercial customers.
Jim's recommend "IP Based" camera systems as they are undoubtedly the future of CCTV. IP cameras offer the following advantages over analogue:
- Higher Image Quality – Higher pixel resolution of the IP cameras means you can zoom into much more details of a scene even after it is recorded without losing clarity.
- Power Over Ethernet Cable (POE) – No need for a separate power source for each camera.
- Easy Management – IP cameras can be easily managed and controlled remotely.
CCTV camera systems have many benefits for both domestic and commercial installations, including:
- Deter Property Crime – when combined with an alarm system, CCTV is a highly effective method of crime deterrence. Even at night, intruders will stay away from properties with CCTV due to the visible glow of the infrared night vision.
- Collecting Evidence – In the unfortunate event of theft occurring at your premises, the recorded footage can provide valuable evidence that can be used to identify and prosecute the offender in a court of law.
- Deter Workplace theft – Who's watching your Cash registers? CCTV systems reduce workplace theft of both cash and inventory by both customers and employees.
- Workplace safety – Install Cameras to record areas where safety may be an issue or monitor staff actions and compliances.

Total Audio & Visual Needs
ZAXSONS was started by Grant Jackson in 1992 in Hobart, Tasmania.
Grant first started his career in the audio-visual industry in 1989 when he worked for Inteltec, installing a comprehensive rental TV system at the Royal Hobart Hospital.
The system that was originally installed was in need of several upgrades in both the new and existing wards. The work was non-stop for 2 years and involved installing over 400 new outlets off the one antenna system; installing the computer chips that switched the TVs on and off; and providing ongoing replacements of faulty sets and repairs.
During that time, the hospital decided that the addition of pay-TV would take the hospital TV system to the next level. The expert at that time brought in by Eastcoast TV (the pay-TV company that became Austar and now Foxtel) to oversee the upgrade was an American called Steve Muldoon, who came all the way from Colorado in the U.S.A.
Expanding Our Expertise
When Steve saw the system and the upgrades that Grant had made over the years, as well as the new wards he had added to the system, he noticed Grant's extensive knowledge and offered him a job working at Eastcoast. Here, Grant programmed the decoders to be sent back out into the field, inspected the work of the other installers Eastcoast used and completed various commercial jobs for a range of different clients.
Grant worked for Eastcoast TV during the week, and throughout the course of his employment, he was often asked to do work that wasn't part of Eastcoast services. Seeing an opportunity, he would book the work for weekends to meet the high demands for the service and make a bit of extra money.
However, soon things got so busy for him that he seized the opportunity to start working full time for himself & as a result, ZAXSONS was founded. Twenty-seven years later, the business is thriving and continually expanding to include a huge variety of technical services.
Now the business offers everything from installation of CCTV and alarm systems to help residents set up their dream home theatre.
Today the business has expanded, and Grant has partnered with David Herridge to expand the business in different and more diverse directions in the audio-video industry with particular emphasis on high standards and to work to budgets.

IP networks have become a standard inclusion in most buildings in today's market. Whether it be a structured cabling solution as part of a commercial environment, or even a wireless network in a small/home office situation, this technology creates the backbone that an IP CCTV device can connect to. As this infrastructure is usually in place, it is usually a cost-effective exercise to add IP CCTV devices into your building. An IP camera can even be powered from the IT equipment it is connected to.
In this new environment, IP surveillance systems offer you tremendous advantages over conventional analogue systems. Images are converted into digital data, enabling greater flexibility, better performance and easier installation. IP Systems address the most important issue of all – lowering your total cost of ownership.
Benefits of IP CCTV Cameras:
• Lower total cost of ownership
• Superior image quality
• Flexible and easy to upgrade to suit future requirements
• Simpler and more cost-effective installations
• Allows for better integration with other security systems
Contact Group can provide design, supply and installation of IP CCTV systems comprising of video management software, servers, network infrastructure, cameras and accessories.
We are also able to set up a remote connection via PC or mobile phone to your system for you to view the live video and review recorded footage.
High-end users may choose to make use of video analytics which use complex algorithms to automatically detect people, vehicles, objects and patterns of behaviour. This is the form of:
• Facial recognition
• License Plate recognition
• People counting
All of which Contact Group are able to integrate into your system seamlessly.
Analogue video is a universal standard and has been for several decades. Virtually any analog CCTV camera can be plugged into any DVR, regardless of brand. No IP address in the camera, no search utility, no PC for that matter. Point the camera; plug in the cable, power on the DVR.
Contact Group has extensive knowledge and experience in integrating different products such as CCTV surveillance, access control, intruder alarms and PA systems.
Contact Group can also deliver a hybrid solution to adapt your current analogue CCTV to a newer IP system.
